There is virtually an endless list of technical indicators for traders to choose from in analyzing a chart. Experiment with various indicators to discover the ones that work best for your particular style of trading, and as applied to the specific stocks that you trade. You’ll likely find that some indicators work very well for you in forecasting price movement for some stocks but not for others. One of the most commonly used technical indicators is a moving average.

The simplest charts display price data plotted on a line graph as it changes over time. Candlestick charts indicate trading volume in addition to price data. More complex charting tools allow you to set additional indicators to fully understand the trading activity for a given equity or index. To become a serious trader, you must first learn how charts work.

If the lunch hours are quiet, there is no need to analyze the movement. Here are the tendencies for US stocks, broken down in sequential order for the typical trading day. Market Summary

When viewing a daily chart, this line represents a 50-day moving average volume level. This line is derived by summing the volume of the last 50 trading days and dividing it by 50. Whether or not volume is above or below the average for a certain period could have a significant impact on your stock chart analysis. For example, above average volume on a daily stock chart can confirm or amplify the significance of a price move. When volume is below average, it becomes questionable whether prices will continue in that direction. Amoving average tracks the average price of a stock, commodity or index over a given period of time. A 200-day moving average looks back in time, averaging the price over the last 200 trading days.

Technical Indicators

The CME introduced a new data feed protocol in December 2014 and all data feed providers have to implement it by October 2015. So far only CQG/Continuum has switched over but TradeStation has announced they will switch in August 2015 and other data providers will follow suit. In December 2014 the CME announced SBNY stock even more changes – an update called MDP 3.0. It took the data feed providers all of 2015 to sort out how to handle this update and there were some heart stopping moments along the way. Trading charts are a visual depiction of the trades made on a stock. The buying and selling of the security create the candlesticks and the charts on multiple time frames. Most growth investors like to see moving averages trending up and they like to see the stock’s current price continually close above the trailing average. Price is the most basic thing you’ll find on almost every chart. Traders commonly choose green for bars where the price increases and red for bars where the price declines. And the small lines above and below the body are called wicks.

This motivates bargain hunters to come off the fence further adding to the buying pressure. Bullish engulfing candles are potential reversal signals on downtrends and continuation signals on uptrends when they form after a shallow reversion pullback. The volume should spike to at least double the average when bullish engulfing candles form to be most effective. Free sites will have quotes delayed by 15 or 20 minutes, which means the chart will not really be useful for trading purposes.
